International Expert, Dr. Bradley Boeve, presents on behalf of the Rinne Lewy Body Dementia Initiative

In October, internationally recognized dementia expert, Dr. Bradley Boeve of the Mayo Clinic joined us in Ann Arbor for our 3rd Annual Rinne Lewy Body Dementia Initiative presentations. Over 100 community members joined us at Huron Woods Memory Support Assisted Living Community to hear Dr. Boeve present, “Understanding Lewy Body Dementia.” Topics of interest included the differences between Alzheimer’s disease and LBD, an approach to managing symptoms of LBD with your neurologist, and disease-modifying avenues under consideration. It was inspiring to see such a large group travel from near and far to learn more about this disease. It certainly brings promise to the future of awareness and care for LBD.

Following the community presentation, Dr. Bradley Boeve presented to 100 neurology faculty, staff, and residents at the Michigan Medicine Neurology Grand Rounds. Colleagues and Dr. Boeve discussed clinical and neuroimaging features of LBD, diagnostic criteria, and the challenge of pharmacologic approaches to symptom management. In addition to his presentations, Dr. Boeve met with the Rinne Initiative leadership and U-M faculty in cognitive disorders, movement disorders, sleep medicine, biomedical engineering, and radiology during his visit.

We are thrilled that, by bringing in this noted expert, we were able to enhance LBD education and awareness both for the community and for health care professionals. As he left Ann Arbor, Dr. Boeve commented that he is not sure there is another university where the clinical and scientific efforts in LBD and Parkinson Disease are as well integrated. And he added, “It is truly impressive to see all that you have built over such a short time.” That rapid building? It is in large part thanks to you!
